This cultural tour is planned
for two days of visiting some of the Romanian tourism highlights.
The first day will be spend in the city of Brasov and
visiting the Bran castle and the second day we will have
the chance to see the fortified church of Prejmer and
of course the unique royal castle of Peles.
Situated in the heart of the country,
at only two hours driving from Bucharest, Brasov is
a unique place offering many attractions for tourists. The
city founded by the Saxons, who colonized Transylvania in
the 12-13th centuries. Here we will visit the old center,
where you'll admire the beautiful buildings such as the astonishing
Black Church which was built in Gothic and Renaissance
style. Initially known as St. Mary's Church, the building
was partly destroyed after the great fire in 1689. Built around
1380, the Black Church is the most representative gothic art
monument in Romania. If we are lucky enough, definatelly won't
miss the weekly organ concert performed here on the largest
organ in South-east Europe.
On the same first day we will visit as well:
- the St. Bartolomeu Church,
the oldest historical monument in Brasov. Built in 1223, St.
Nicolae Church, by its impressive size, dominates the oldest
part of the city - Scheii Brasovului;
- The old city hall: initially built as a watch tower, once
the city has developed the building was turned into the city
hall. Starting with 1420, when the building was renovated,
the local council meetings and all the trials were held here.
Nowadays the building hosts the History Museum of Brasov.
- while in Brasov, definatelly won't miss the narrowest street
in Romania, the Rope Street!
In the afternoon we will drive towards Bran Castle.
In addition to its unique architecture, the castle is famous
because of persistent myths that it was once the home of Vlad
the Impaler. Commonly known as Dracula's Castle, the Bran
Castle was originally a stronghold built by the Knights of
Teutonic Order in 1212. The first documentary attestation
of it is the act issued on November 19, 1377, giving the Saxons
of Kronstadt (Brasov) the privilage to build the Citadel.
The building started in 1378 as a defense against Turks and
later became a customs post on the pass between Transylvania
and Wallachia.
On the second day we'll visit Prejmer
fortified church. It is the biggest of this kind in the
Southeastern Europe being built in the 13th century by Germans
settled in Transylvania.
The fortress, in circle shape, had walls thick by 3-4 m and
12 m in height, fire holes bastions, iron gates, deep moats
and lifting bridges. The citadel of Prejmer was included on
the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.
From here we'll head towards Sinaia city, following
the beautiful Prahova Valley. You will have an astonishing
view over the Bucegi Mountain, especially over the craggy
Caraiman Massive with its Heroes' Cross built in the memory
of the soldieries who died in the First World War. In Sinaia
we will visit Peles Castle, the most beautiful castle
in Romania, residence of the former royal family. Peles Castle
is a romantic castle built between 1873 and 1883, and is considered
by some to be the most beautiful of its kind in Europe.
