The tour will first follow the Maramures
two day trip, which we separately have on offer and then,
after passing the Eastern Carpathians, will explore the famous
painted monasteries in the region of Bucovina. We will be
accommodated in traditional guesthouses both in Maramures
and Bucovina regions, where our hosts will gladly offer their
traditional homemade meals.
Maramures region (north est of Romania), well known
as the woodland for its woodworks - houses, gates
and impressive churches, is undoubtedly one of the last Romanian
traditional regions, the best remedy for the stresses of everyday
life in our modern, overcrowded cities. We are usually welcomed
with open arms, in this beautiful land, by people fiercely
proud of their history and traditions. Our journey to Maramures
will include the most famous wooden churches, such as
Budesti, Barsana, Poienile Izei, Ieud, many of them listed
on the UNESCO world heritage patrimony, The Communist Prison
in Sighet, The Merry Cemetery in Sapanta and also The Monastery
of Sapanta, where is located the tallest wooden church in
Europe.
We highly recommend that the program should be open for
changes considering that Maramures region has many local traditions,
specific events and festivals, country fairs, religious celebrations,
and many others.
Bucovina region (north west of Romania) is worldwide
famous for the beauty of its forests and especially for the
arhipelago of monasteries raised five hundred
years ago by great Moldovian rullers and patrons of art. Each
church has its specific colour: Voronet, also called "the
Sistine Chapel of the East" (blue), Humor (red), Sucevita
(green), Moldovita (yellow) and Arbore (combination of colours).
All these monasteries, due to their outter paintings (frescos)
have received in 1976 the "Pomme d'or" prize of
FIJET International Organization for their cultural and touristic
value; also five of them have been included on the UNESCOs
world heritage sites list.
Maramures and Bucovina regions are known for their strong
Romanian traditions, mostly kept in the rural areas, and the
refinment of the folk artists, who are masters in weaving,
pottery, painting icons on wood or glass, preserving customs
related to the most important events in ones life (birth,
wedding and death) or to the main holidays during the entire
year.
